Ula Sickle
Ula Sickle è una coreografa e performer canadese di origine polacca, basata a Bruxelles. Con una formazione in danza contemporanea, attraversa varie diverse discipline, dalle arti visive alla musica contemporanea. Sebbene il suo lavoro assuma molteplici forme, si concentra su un approccio coreografico al movimento e sulla percezione e la ricezione specifici delle live arts. La sua ricerca di un'alternativa ai canoni della danza contemporanea l'ha portata a coinvolgere performer che incarnassero con forza altre storie di movimento. Ula Sickle fa emergere una musicalità e una materialità dei corpi impiegando forme di scrittura coreografica in cui la codificazione culturale e il potere politico delle danze pop di carattere globale diventa il centro della scena. Ha studiato Storia dell'Arte e Semiotica all'Università di Toronto e Performance Studies a Parigi VIII, prima di frequentare P.A.R.T.S. Performing Arts Research and Training Studios a Bruxelles. Dal 2008 al 2010 si è occupata di cinema studiando a Le Fresnoy, all’interno di un programma post-laurea in media. Nel 2017-18 è stata artista in residenza al Castello Ujazdowski, il Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea di Varsavia, e al Wiels Arts Center a Bruxelles. Tra i lavori più recenti figurano RELAY (2018), The Sadness (2020), Echoic Choir (2021) con la vocalist Stine Janvin, e Holding Present (2023) con l'ensemble musicale Ictus. RELAY (unplugged) è la prima performance ad essere inclusa nella Collezione d'arte della Comunità Fiamminga. Ula Sickle is a Polish Canadian choreographer and performer based in Brussels, Belgium. From a background in contemporary dance, she works across disciplines, drawing from the visual arts or contemporary music. While her work takes many forms, she focuses on a choreographic approach to movement and a work on perception and reception, specific to the live arts. Her interest in looking for an alternative to the canon of contemporary dance, has led her to seek out performers who embody other movement histories. Frequently centered around strong performers, she searches for forms of choreographic writing, where the cultural coding and political power of ‘popular’ dancing as a global phenomenon can be revealed or where the musicality and materiality of the body itself can take center stage. She studied Art History & Semiotics at the University of Toronto and Performance Studies at Paris VIII, before attending P.A.R.T.S. Performing Arts Research and Training Studios in Brussels. From 2008-2010 she pursued her interest in film, studying at Le Fresnoy, a post-graduate media program in the North of France. In 2017-18 she was artist in residence at the Ujazdowski Castle, Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw and Wiels Arts Center in Brussels. Her recent works include RELAY (2018), The Sadness (2020), Echoic Choir (2021) with vocalist Stine Janvin and Holding Present (2023) with the Ictus music ensemble.
