The Telescopic Aulos of Atlas ruota intorno alla pratica artistica di Lukas De Clerck incentrata sull'Aulos, un antico strumento a fiato doppio greco-romano e al progetto archeo-musicologico di farlo rivivere. Ma mentre classicisti e liutai si sono spesso interessati a conservarlo come reperto storico o a crearne repliche esatte, De Clerck si è concentrato sulla progettazione di uno strumento vivo, libero dalle aspettative tradizionali su come dovesse apparire, suonare o venire suonato. Dopo diversi anni di approfondimento ha dato libero sfogo alla sua produzione espressiva, necessariamente autodidatta, data l’assenza di alcuna documentazione sonora originale. Seguendo il desiderio di spogliare lo strumento del suo enigmatico passato, De Clerck ha creato un nuovo Aulos contemporaneo: l'Aulos Telescopico di Atlante. Nell’antichità questo strumento veniva associato a Dioniso per le sue qualità timbriche e le sonorità drone, in contrapposizione alla dolce e armonica lira di Apollo. La sua microtonalità e il timbro ruvido erano fuori luogo in un'epoca che attribuiva il massimo valore estetico alla perfezione matematica; di conseguenza, Orazio derideva lo strumento definendolo volgare e impetuoso, mentre Pratinas lo definiva adatto ad accompagnare "solo le giostre porta a porta e le risse dei giovani ubriachi". Oggi, il Telescopic Aulos consente a De Clerck di focalizzarsi sulla ricerca delle qualità di uno strumento i cui elementi centrali sono la microtonalità, la tessitura sonora e le risultanti psicoacustiche, rendendo il suo lavoro decisamente unico in diversi ambienti musicali.
Lukas De Clerck è un musicista e sound artist che vive a Bruxelles. De Clerck è noto specie per il suo strumento auto-costruito, l’Aulos Telescopico di Atlante, un nuovo aulos contemporaneo di metallo. Musicalmente il suo approccio è guidato da curiosità ed un forte interesse per il continuo processo di trasformazione. Invece di conservare ciò che si trova, inventa ciò che non c'è. Un processo che mira a essere radicale ma attento. Si è esibito in festival europei tra cui Rewire (NL), Sonic Acts (NL), BRDCST (BE), Meakusma (BE), Sonic Protest (FR), Archipel Festival (CH) e UH Fest (HU). The Telescopic Aulos of Atlas revolves around Lukas De Clerck's artistic practice centered around the Aulos, an ancient Greco-Roman double wind instrument, double-reeded double pipe, that got extinct more than a millennium ago, and his archaeo-musicological project of reviving it. After several years of delving deep in the practice of Aulos reed making and playing replicas of ancient instruments, he opened up his inevitably auto-didact artistic output. While classicists and luthiers have often been interested in preserving it as a historical relic or creating exact replicas, De Clerck focused on designing a living instrument, free from traditional expectations of how it should look, sound, or be played. Following the desire to strip the instrument from its enigmatic past, he created a new, contemporary Aulos: The Telescopic Aulos. In its time, the instrument was often characterized as the dark, Dionysian foil to Apollo’s sweet, harmonic lyre. Its microtonality and rough timbre were out of place in an era that ascribed the highest aesthetic value to mathematical perfection; accordingly, Horace derided the instrument as vulgar and impetuous, while Pratinas said it was fit to accompany “only door-to-door carousels and the brawling of drunken young men.” Today, this self-designed instrument enables De Clerck to narrow down his research on the sound qualities of the instrument in which micro-tonality, psycho-acoustics and sound texture are central elements. Together with his phenomenological view on the instrument, his research has made him a unique voice in the revival of the instrument, introducing the instrument into different fields of music.
Lukas De Clerck is a musician and sound artist based in Brussels. De Clerck is best known for his self-designed instrument, the Telescopic Aulos, a new contemporary aulos. His approach is driven by playful curiosity with a strong interest in the process of transformation. Instead of conserving what is found, he invents what is not. A process that aims to be as radical, as it is careful. De Clerck has performed at European festivals including Rewire (NL), Sonic Acts (NL), BRDCST (BE), Meakusma (BE), Sonic Protest (FR), Archipel Festival (CH), and UH Fest (HU).
