Martedi 16 dicembre 2025 alle 19.30 Xing presenta, presso P420 in Via Azzo Gardino 9, Bologna, High Gear, una performance dell’artista sud-coreano Kidows Kim, per la prima volta in Italia.

Il lavoro di Kidows Kim è intriso di ‘Monstrarchaeology’, approccio che consiste nello scavare forme organiche ambigue che vagano tra il figurativo e l'astratto, attingendo a memorie collettive, esperienze intime, di genere, sociali e politiche. Utilizzando questo metodo, attraverso la distorsione del corpo umano normativo, della voce e degli oggetti quotidiani, esplora la mostruosità che emerge dalla decostruzione delle idee dominanti nell'inconscio collettivo.

High Gear è un solo che esplora una serie di figure corporee provenienti da ricordi personali parassitati da immagini tratte dal mondo dei manga alternativi. Attraverso un vero e proprio scavo, l’artista interroga un ciclo incessante di produzione, consumo e reincarnazione. Piuttosto che riprodurre degli schemi, la figura che è in scena cerca di sovvertirne i meccanismi, interrompendone la replicazione per liberarsi dalla loro presa. Traendo ispirazione dalla struttura dello yonkoma manga, un tipo di manga a quattro tavole spesso utilizzato nel giornalismo politico, High Gear attraversa quattro temi fondamentali: 1起) nascere, 2承) mangiare, 3轉) lavorare e 4結) morire, e si dispiega all'interno di un circuito chiuso in cui le rappresentazioni vengono continuamente assorbite, (de)costruite e (ri)formate. In questo processo, i significati si accumulano, si scontrano e confondono i confini tra soggetto, oggetto e ibrido mostruoso. Negli interstizi di questo amalgama di rumori e sguardi, un corpo frammentato e spettrale lotta per trovare la sua strada. Testimonia il conturbante che si radica nel familiare e la crescente distanza che, nonostante la prossimità fisica, si estende nello spazio. High Gear diventa così ‘uno spazio escluso’, dove il corpo si espone e si decompone alla ricerca di un esterno sfuggente.
High Gear inaugura il terzo capitolo della cosmogonia intima descritta anche nella sua opera in progress Dizionario delle Creature Fantastiche.

Kidows Kim è un artista performativo nato in Corea del Sud, che vive a Parigi. Dopo aver studiato graphic design e mimo, ha proseguito la sua formazione presso due centri nazionali di danza in Francia: il CNDC di Angers e in seguito ha frequentato il programma Master Exerce presso l'ICI–CCN di Montpellier sotto la direzione di Christian Rizzo. Le sue creazioni formano una cosmogonia intima sotto forma di ‘Dizionario delle creature fantastiche’, di cui ha presentato i primi tre capitoli: Funkenstein nel 2021, la seconda parte Cutting Mushrooms nel 2023, e il terzo High Gear nel 2025. Parallelamente, ha elaborato una serie di performance in video, puntuali ed effimere, incentrate sull'ossessione per i manga. Il lavoro di Kidows Kim mira a estrarre la stranezza sotterranea nascosta nel prosaico, lasciando trasparire le complesse interazioni tra soggetto, oggetto e abietto. La sua estetica si nutre di diverse culture alternative: cyberpunk, musica e cinema sperimentali, manga, videogiochi... che permeano il suo immaginario e ne contaminano le forme. La pratica artistica di Kim si traduce in una fisicità interdisciplinare espressa attraverso diversi media (movimento, vestiario, suono, scultura, scrittura, ecc.). Il corpo diventa il punto di partenza per una proliferazione di potenziali materiali coreografici. Per interrogarsi sulla loro stratificazione e sulle frizioni che ne derivano, considera la relazione tra i media come metafora di un ordine sociale gerarchico. Ispirato dal pensiero rizomatico, Kidows Kim cerca di approcciare questi media non come entità fisse, ma come elementi fluidi, capaci di generare indefinitamentenuove configurazioni e nuove radici.

Tuesday 16 December 2025 at 7.30 pm Xing presents in Bologna at the P420 art gallery, High Gear, a performance by South Korean artist Kidows Kim, for the first time in Italy.

Kidows Kim’s work is imbued with ‘Monstrarchaeology’, a method that consists of excavating an ambiguous organic form that wanders between the figurative and the abstract, drawing from collective memories, intimate, social, political, and gender-related experiences. Based on this method, through the distortion of the normative human body, voice, and everyday objects, he explores the monstrosity that emerges from deconstructing dominant ideas within the collective unconscious.

High Gear is a solo piece that explores a corporeal collection of figures drawn from parasitized intimate memories, intertwined with imagery from alternative manga. Through this excavation, Kidows Kim questions the relentless cycle of production, consumption, and reincarnation. Rather than reproducing these patterns, a figure seeks to subvert their mechanisms, disrupt their repetition, and break free from their hold. Drawing inspiration from the structure of yonkoma manga, a type of four-panel comic often used in political journalism, this solo delves into four fundamental themes: 1起) birth, 2承) eating, 3轉) working, and 4結) death. It unfolds within a closed circuit where representations are continuously absorbed, (de)constructed, and (re)formed. In this process, meanings accumulate, collide, and blur the boundaries between subject, object, and abject. In the interstices of this amalgamation of noise and gazes, a fragmented, ghostly body struggles to find its way. It bears witness to the uncanny that takes root in the familiar and to the growing distance that, despite physical proximity, spreads across space. High Gear thus becomes an excluded space, where the body exposes and decomposes itself in the pursuit of an elusive exterior.

Kidows Kim is a performing artist born in South Korea, living in Paris. After studying graphic design and mime, he continued his training at two national dance centres in France: the CNDC in Angers and later pursued the Master Exerce program at ICI–CCN in Montpellier under the direction of Christian Rizzo. His creations form an intimate cosmogony in the shape of a ‘Dictionary of Fantastical Creatures’. He has revealed its first three chapters: Funkenstein in 2021, the second part Cutting Mushrooms in 2023, and the third High Gear in 2025. In parallel, he has been developing a series of punctual and ephemeral video-performances centered on an obsession with manga. Kidows Kim’s work aims at extracting the underground strangeness hidden in the prosaic, where the complex interactions between subject, object, and abject come to light. His aesthetic is nourished by various alternative cultures: cyberpunk, experimental music and cinema, manga, video games… that flow through his imagination and contaminate the forms. Kim’s artistic practice unfolds as an interdisciplinary physicality expressed across multiple mediums (movement, clothing, sound, sculpture, writing, etc.). The body becomes the starting point for a proliferation of potential choreographic materials. In order to question their stratification and the frictions that arise from it, he conceives the relationship between mediums as a metaphor for a hierarchical social order. Inspired by rhizomatic thought, Kidows Kim seeks to approach these mediums not as fixed entities, but as fluid elements, capable of endlessly generating new configurations and new roots.
